Each year someone very special is selected to win the Federal Duck Stamp, and while I enjoy this work, my painting has not been selected. You might ask, why do you want to paint the Duck Stamp? That is a very good question and worthy of a very good answer. When the program began way back in 1933, the art was very good, but with no color, then eventually color was added, making the judging elements more difficult. You have composition, with the 7 elements of design, color, and the duck species being portrayed. The numerical point system is not perfect yet by staying with their judging criteria the final and highest score is selected to be the Federal Duck Stamp the following year, there is always a one year lag in the program.
My process is very detailed as I go into the field to take images of as many duck species as I can photograph. The anatomy of the duck has to be perfect so my images from the field help me to document their every detail so I do not miss in my sketch and painting. I love the development side of the duck painting and all the time in the field studying these very beautiful ducks and there is a lot to learn in this process, habitat, behavior, and mating behavior in the spring with both the drake and hen. This is a dynamic experience and so memorable, worthy of the time necessary to document and record, for a future duck stamp. I do all my own camera work, as you may not know the duck stamp has to be free hand sketched and no other computer or other aid in making the sketch with is painted.
This year the 5 duck species are Mallard, Blue Winged Teal Cinnamon Teal, Gadwall, and Trumpeter Swan so each of us select one species and submit that painting by August 15, 2015, is the deadline. Approximately over 200 American Artists participate each year and as I develop my duck stamp blogs I’ll share the spoils of a winner and how the USFWS celebrates with the artist and his home community, very neat.
Best wishes,

This bald eagle reminds me of wonderful days, blue skies, warmer temperatures in the sun and admiring this eagle, our Nation’s Bird, sitting high on what I call ” One Branch ” a perch that allows them to hunt to catch their daily bread in the wild, no grocery store to pull up to, but in the wild. They are more intelligent than man today knows but that is another story for another day.
This original sketch can be made into an original oil painting if you enjoy, and on the bottom of my blog is my FASO website address to contact me if you want a commission of this original sketch.
Have a good day and enjoy the winter, warm or cold all the same, is life in these United States.

Those sweet sandhill cranes on November 1ST, were faced with incredible weather conditions, using around Thanksgiving Day, November 27, the sandhill cranes lift off for their wintering home in the south, due to very cold and heavy snows. This past November was very different and we experienced very cold temperatures, on November 1ST, I was visiting Crex Meadows Wildlife Area at Phantom Lake and the extreme below zero temperatures froze the lake solid and there standing on the ice were 4,000 sandhill cranes. The atmosphere that morning was full of moisture or fog making the sky a pure white color and the -4 degrees below zero, about have of the sandhill cranes pulled their legs up under their body to keep them from freezing. The usual temperatures for this time of year are 25-30 degrees above zero, so usually they do not stay when these very harsh temperatures are reached. IN today’s original pencil sketch one of the sandhill cranes displays his legs out behind him and the other sandhill crane has his legs tucked up under his body to keep warm. This original sketch is called, ” Legs Up ” and I am willing to paint an original oil painting of this sketch. If you buy this original oil painting you also receive this original pencil sketch, my thanks for buying my oil painting. At the bottom of this note is my FASO WEbsite you can contact me to pursue this painting, thank you in advance. Visit my WordPress blog daily to check for new original sketches, all will be unique and new, no repeats. Best wishes,

Sunrise in the wild is one of the most beautiful times in the day, it signifies the beginning of a new day with new hope. Something about starting fresh, these sandhill cranes are early risers too, and in late October there is close to 25,000 sandhill cranes in Crex Meadows Wildlife Area. This year our fall weather was unpredictable , in October we had 2 1/2″ of wet snow did not stay, but is an indication of things to come. A week ago today on Nov 10TH we had over 15″ of very heavy and wet snow and we have already been below zero. Last year our first deep snow fall was on Nov 27. Welcome to NW WI, stay tuned will not be like watching cartoons, however, my studio is a warm and friendly haven from the harsh winter weather and I am going to paint sandhill and whooping cranes all winter. Art sales are very special and if you like to view and or purchase on my website here is my address: http://www.jimspringett.com and you can check on eBay too. Every year our community thinks about ways to beautify and make the community nicer, but this past year a young 9 year old boy named Mason Getts is dreaming about the day when Webster, WI can build a new children’s playground. Can you imagine for a moment a young 9 year old boy thinking about and then with the help of our Village of Webster Board and community we are steadily working to help Mason and his dream.
So this month, December, the month of Christmas preparations and giving I am painting and listing my work on eBay and starting the bids at $0.99 and no reserves jsyt let this all be the way God intends and not worry about a thing and while God has given me breath and strength and a new day I can pant another and another and another for Mason and his program. All the proceeds for each sale go 100% to Mason’s new playground. The painting on eBay with two sandhill cranes is called ” Summer Skies and Dreams Come True ” finishes today at 7PM CST and the second painting just started last night called, ” Christmas Blessings ” has new bids already too, so a lot of loving people amidst us and many thanks.

The Living Bible is so good to help you hear his heart and the spirit of God so I am reading from this Living Bible and all you near and far just know, God is a God of Miracles, and a God Of Love and a God of Joy and a God Of Hope, so peace be yours today and I just want to share this loving text today to show that his love shines through it all and he is Constant and not changing!!!
Here goes ” For though he wounds, he binds and heals again. He will deliver you again and again, so that no evil can touch you.
He will keep you from death in famine, and from the power of the sword in time of war.
You will be safe from slander; no need to fear the future.
You shall laugh at war and famine; wild animals will leave you alone. Dangerous animals will be at peace with you.
You need not worry about your home while you are gone; nothing shall be stolen from your barns.
Your sons(and daughters) shall become important to our community; your decedents shall be as numerous as grass! You shall live a long, good life; like standing grain, you’ll not be harvested until it’s time! I have found from experience that all of this is true. For your own good, listen to my counsel.”
with compassion, love, joy and most of all hope,

All the days of our lives are filled with wonder and awe of God’s love and mercy for each of us. And being kind to your enemy is very important too, not only for you but for your enemy, who while they were once an enemy are now your loving friend. I wish everyone the very best with their family and friends for thanksgiving day and day the Lord has given us to be with friends, strangers and family the Lord decides where you will be if you listen and follow his path.
Today there are three paintings the red tailed hawk, the bald eagle and the golden eagle, three of my favorite birds of pray not prey. I hope you enjoy and can share with your friends and enjoy your day and be at peace God is there and will help you in each step of your work and will guide you safely for you are his people.
Today in verse 20-25 God shares his wisdom and I’ll write for you so if you do not have a Bible you can read this and know.
” Being happy go lucky around a person whose heart is heavy is as bad as stealing his jacket in cold weather or rubbing salt in his wounds.”
” If your enemy is hungry, give him food! If he is thirsty, give him something to drink! This will make him feel ashamed of himself, and God will reward you.”
” As surely as the wind from the north brings cold, just as surely a retort causes anger!”
” It is better to live in a corner of an attic than in a beautiful home with a cranky, quarrelsome woman.”
” Good news from far away is like cold water to the thirsty.”
Amen and Amen!!!
