So You Want To Know What Goes Into Making My 2025 Ohio Duck Stamp Painting? Ok

Most of the people have enjoyed actually in America for quite some time going back to 1933 when our first federal duck stamp was issued. It was a conservation program that could help generate money to help maintain and keep the habitat all across North America into USA strong and we need be even purchase new land for ideal habitat preservation for the future generations. It’s not quite 100 years (91 years),but it’s getting there and has that program been a tremendous success you ask? For sure. Yes an affirmative big yes. It has gotten together countless, and or millions of Americans in the pursuit and conservation of our great country for our very magnificent wildlife our waterfowl the ducks. The creators of the federal duck stamp program were brilliant at that time, realizing that the Art community for generations had been utilizing their skill set to paint beautiful wildlife of all kinds four legged wing you name it and so they thought why not let’s see what happens.

Now starting for me in 1990 beginning my artistic journey with the paintbrush it wasn’t until I had relocated from Hudson, Wisconsin to Webster, Wisconsin and Marge and I began our second career Marge with her photography Jimmy with his photography and oil, painting of wildlife and portrait oil painting. We started that journey in 2006 and I was happy to start in my new studio in the year 2007. I met Jack White and tremendous oil painter in America and his wife.Mikki they were kind beyond words teaching and helping me to master and to learn more about oil, painting mediums. I purchased every book a Jack had written on the subject of oil painting, and in later when he could no longer paint when his eyes shifted and would not allow him to paint but he could write novels. I bought all his novels and to my knowledge they are still available on their website. I haven’t been there for quite some time, but those of you are just out there that need a good novel to read or maybe some of you artist Jack had tremendous skill and knowledge and he shared openly in his writing publications. And along the way of our friendship and his mentorship with me as I got into the year 2009 that was the first year I decided I really after painting hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of ducks wanted to throw my hat in the ring actually a very big ring. I didn’t realize at the time the federal duck stamp program. Right in my neck of the woods here in Webster and one of our local establishments and Siren Wisconsin, David Mass had tremendous oil paintings for sale originals and if you recall, David 12 of the federal duck stop competitions in his painting career a remarkable accomplishment. He used to come up during the summer months to Siren and put on a workshop however I missed out on that opportunity in about the time I realize or had learned about it the business that he worked through had gone out of business and so that program that he had during the summer disappeared. Bummer. I can tell you I went to see Jock and his jewelry and art store and looked at David’s work and marveled at his oil painting marvelous. Just before Jock sold his business he was wanting to have me bring my original oil painting of wildlife and also display right alongside David’s work. We never got to take a look at how that worked or get that fire as things dramatically changed for his family and he had to make an adjustment and sell the business. Bummer again. And while I was painting heavily in oil paints, if you recall any of my history and story before also I had a strong background in watercolor painting, and I maintained it all throughout my ears even right now and that year in 2009 I purchased a panel from Ampersand called ” Aquabord” for watercolors and they sold the exact size I needed 9″ x 12″ x 1/8 of an inch thick and I bought about eight panels at Dick Blick in January 2009 when they first introduced that panel to the industry. My two primary watercolors at that time were Winsor & Newton Professional watercolors made in Great Britain, and Maimierblu watercolor made in Italy, (20 years experience). That spring ( May), in Rice Lake National wildlife Refuge in McGregor, Minnesota. beautiful, I was able to get beautiful images of Blue Winged Teal Drake. I did not place or win that particular competition that year, but it gave me experience with painting for a national competition amongst the Giants. The Aquabord, by Ampersand I later continued developing in using and by so adding my surface chemistry even to this day and I will explain have a really super terrific finished surface to pain on. As most of you that have been aware of what I do I never paint directly on any manufacturers material canvas wood hardboard right on down the line not a thing not even watercolor paper. I never use a thing on its own merit because it cannot do basically until I add my chemistry what I wanted to do.

Over the years maybe the next year 2010 besides the federal duck stamp I added the Wisconsin waterfall duck stamp and later in 2018 I added the Oregon duck stamp and in the year 2023. I also tried to enter that Louisiana duck stamp, and even though my work got there and met all the requirements and the timelines it did not get into the competition? A huge mystery. And this year in 2025. I did not compete in the Oregon duck stamp, but I did in my state of Wisconsin and now I’m preparing work for the 2025 Ohio duck stamp this is my home state where I grew up in Toledo Ohio. This year their competition, I will paint the ring.Necked Ducks a pair both Drake and hen and in this current development. All of my background is being put to the test. As a chemical engineer and working in the pulp and paper industry for a long time, I understand the characteristics of paper and those particular fiber characteristics for watercolorist are unique and even for oil painters I will explain. The pigments that are utilized in both mediums, watercolors and oil paints are identical. The only difference is the particle size distribution. And the medium is used in watercolor you use gum, Arabic, medium, and an oil paints you use linseed oil or walnut oil or safflower oil and so the mechanisms are different but over the years I’ve been able to combine the strengths of both the watercolor with a smaller 2 to 9 µm particle size distribution with the larger oil paint particle size distribution of 23 to 38 µm in some cases. It goes to size 84 µm and also to 100 µm if natural pigments or Earth Pigments are used. That’s not all bad because the differential between the small and the large particle size and the difference in the reflective index gives a tremendous light scattering as a light penetrates through the transparent layers and back to your eye. This is how great luminosity in depth in the oil painting can be developed. So where does paper come into the picture. With my surface chemistry being made of a lot of particles. The beauty of a substrate of paper is that the paper has a dimension and a depth to it if you’re using other substrates, that is not the case. In my case, I laminate the paper directly to my Baltic Birchwood, and then from there with the proper preparation of the surface of the paper can begin my oil painting. I utilize all transparent colors, so therefore, all the different layers in glaciers the light can transmit 100% through and go to the base in this case would be Baltic birch and then reflect in tremendous light Kettering back to your eye, this creates magnificent luminosity.

Just a few days ago, I posted a painting of a green winged teal on 9x12x1/8-Aquabord, all in watercolors. I had some difficulty with this substrate with my chemistry this year, but my formulation using different materials contractive slightly different from my past history with my earlier surface preparation chemistry. It was not a showstopper, but enough to make me pause, but I went ahead anyways and ordered for the 2025 Ohio duck stamp a larger piece 23″ x 18″ x 1/8 of an inch thick and I have that surface now completely prepared with my Formula-I-II-&III. It’s not a perfect surface as I had hoped for, but overall not bad that’s like being close in horseshoes. It doesn’t count when a ringer comes in and in this case that particular panel I had to set aside any slight anomaly later is gonna dictate and change the magnitude of the beauty of my oil painting. I know this through a lot of experience and tears. My better surface. Is made using a panel of Baltic birch 1/4 of an inch thick. I can’t go thicker than that to meet the competition rules and regulations. This particular surface is tremendous with everything I apply in all my surface chemistry and unless I make a mistake and being dyslexic, I can do that generally, the panel is absolutely as smooth as a piece of glass when I’m done, and then this type of competition that’s important surface roughness is a no no, and will detect greatly from the light absorption and penetration will cause light scattering at the surface which will diminish the light transmission and therefore lower luminosity in depth.

So I’m gonna share a work of art this morning that is the back bone and basis for what I’ll be doing in the next few weeks on the 2025 Ohio duck stamp. This particular painting today this morning is called.”Dance To Music” is a trio 3 sandhill cranes at sunrise in Crex Meadows. In Greensburg, Wisconsin USA. This particular painting had a very unique beginning and it is painted on a piece of 9″ x 12″ x 3/8 of an inch deep Baltic Birchwood that has been sealed and laminated with paper. The paper has been specially treated with my surface chemistry and from there until it’s completion I used four different painting mediums before sealing the final layer with my retouch varnish usually about two or three layers, let dry, and then there after shipped to the duck stamp competition. In the case of the sandhills that was not shipped I’m only making reference to what I’ll be doing with the duck stamp in relationship to what I had done earlier with this painting. Based on the amount of research that I do continuously over 30+ years, I haven’t really in many cases of stayed with one routine like 99% of the artist today no so to be able to get a snapshot about for example how would this particular application be viewed by the public in this case it goes back to 2019 and then therefore I can collect data with the public on my website and by this time now I have a solid view. There is no quick journey for marketing analysis. When you’re on leading edge technology you cannot advance the knowledge to people. It takes a slow amount of time for them to catch up. But I can confidently say all indications from many sources are pretty positive in this particular direction. is it a good enough to be you know a painting that could maybe place in the top 10 I don’t know? I have to do the work and just like everybody put my pants on and my shoes the same way and go to work every day. This particular painting has remarkable color and luminosity. You cannot see it on your digital application, computer iPad or iPhone but when you look at it in person, it is tremendous you’ll just have to take my word for it. It already has a happy home so the probability that you can see it in person is pretty nil.

Like most good stories there is a lot of history to be shared and it made my blog post a little longer hopefully you enjoyed.

” A Good Son” our Pastor Brian and wife Marcy’s Son

This year has been a remarkable year in many ways and this is a belated birthday gift. I will be bringing with me today at our Sabbath worship for our Pastor Brian and his wife Marcy. Their son’s birthday was last January and all of the work I was doing on Salvador Mundi had me in the heat of the battle and therefore I could not break away. When you are in leading edge development in painting, you have to stay with it and too many irons in the fire just create a problem and being dyslexic even more so.

We are blessed with so many young sons myself I have two Christopher James and Norman Paul, both tremendous men grown and we have three grandchildren from each family for a total of six grandchildren. Can you imagine what joy all of them create in the Springett household? We have some birthdays coming up in our own family, so this will be a lot of fun as we move toward our Christmas celebration.

This particular painting is very unique. I am painting it on.Aquabord by Ampersand and did my first federal duck stamp in 2009 and this was in January 1 year they came out with this product. It’s used primarily by artist using watercolor however I modify with my own chemistry and can utilize whatever media I want. They have a beautiful base very flat hardboard panel. That is very dimensionally stable and it does save me preparation time if I’m using wood or hardboard and I can amend the surface with my chemistry and move along quicker. This particular painting is a tuneup for my 2025 Ohio duck stamp competition and that painting is due to be shipped between February one and February 13 so I don’t have a great deal of time. I am preparing the panel for that painting in the mate board is being made as the same time so hopefully everything will come together in a positive manner. I’ve been doing unique techniques all my career and this is an all watercolor painting. My first two color layers are in Earth Pigments and additionally afterwards for more color layers by M gram water colors. The surface is a bit rough, but I’ll work the bugs out of that on the next painting in that can happen in a case like this being a very first pain. I have to work out and determine the best practice.

I will be meeting Pastor Brian about 8:30 AM at our church as they have adult Bible study prior to worship service at 10 AM and can pass along our gift from Jimmy Marge and the pups to their son Seth and as we do remember Seth it reminds all of us about the importance of letting others know on their special day. We’re thinking of them and we love them. Even when they are not our own sons. The Lord has taught all of us to love one another and to do unto others as we would want done to ourselves, and that sums up the law in the holy scripture.

have a great day and we send our best wishes to all of you in your entire and today on December 8 Sunday the Sabbath, we thank God, our Lord Jesus for every blessing, big and small and all the little bumps along help us to grow and to reach up to him even more so every day and let him know how much we love and adore him. May you be blessed and may you see his shining face in that day when there’s no beginning and no end we ask in Jesus name amen.

Continuously Work and Create Most Beautiful Oil Paintings

After having worked many years as an oil painter started in 1990 and utilizing many many of the world class oil, paint manufacturers globally, I could not develop the type of luminosity and depth in my oil painting that you can see in paintings created by Leonardo da Vinci and Vermeer. Many customers and art enthusiast asked me. Why do you keep switching brands of oil paint? They went on to say most artist settle on a given brand and then go from their painting into the sunset or however, far their career can go. This is true in my case it related to the art I had seen growing up in the Toledo Museum of art in Toledo, Ohio, and those Renaissance era oil paintings are far superior to the oil paintings created by artist today. Most of our current day artists do not understand light color and how to optimize in what makes oil painting so superior to any other medium. Ironically, Leonardo da Vinci was able to create a fire superior finished oil painting through his utilization of transparent oils, not opaque and ironically, even though he used lead white, he had two different forms and they were not opaque. Those that you can purchase in modern time now are tremendously opaque and will stop light transmission and also reduce luminosity. Ironically, Leonardo also realized the use of canvas in oil paintings, would not create the type of surface to maximize light transmission because of the surface texture. If you study light, you know immediately any surface roughness of any kind causes the light to reflect immediately back out and not go into the multiple layers underneath. So what did he do? He immediately shifted gears and went to using walnut wood and Poplar wood in both the Salvador Mundi and Mona Lisa, and all the other paintings and ironically those two paintings after 500+ years are gorgeous at this time. So many of the so-called senior oil painters in America making a lot of money are not even listening or following his great example and continuously paint on canvas, and that is a done deal eventually will deteriorate and go away even being curated in a good museum it will not last. So I had great wisdom and understanding a long time ago, but it seems that our modern oil painters are not interested in the science and the tremendous ability utilizing natural Earth Pigments and also adding additional particles to enhance and magnify the luminosity of their oil painting.

In this particular painting of a wood duck drake is my 2025 Wisconsin waterfall duck stamp entry. No, I did not win an acrylic artist took the honors of first place, however in review our art critics, and or those that are judging original artwork in our wildlife competitions, have seemed to lost their real artistic eye when evaluating the different mediums being used. Whenever I view acrylic paintings I can pick them out like a sore thumb compared to a tremendously painted oil painting. So I’m not really pretty at this moment technically speaking why and acrylic painting would take top honors. Technically there are not as. Regardless of them, using airbrushes and other techniques that the programs will allow them to use instead of only utilizing a paintbrush. In my current work here that you notice this has only retouch varnish on the outside, but underneath I have 10 color layers, all in Earth Pigments and luminosity if you could see it with your own eyes, I do not think you can see it through the digital medium, but the luminosity is tremendous and is literally my best duck Drake I ever painted and yet it didn’t even gather any momentum or even place. I’m very hopeful through a lot of dedication and continuously painting, much higher level work of art and carrying this forward for the rest of my art career I’ll be able to commence many other oil painters who have been using opaque oil paints in my view just ruins their work and makes it very non-dimensional and very flat basically the oil paints today being synthetically made most of the oil painters are just colorless. They are not creating at the level, Leonardo da Vinci or Vermeer created all those years ago and therefore they did not advance the science of oil painting. The recent modern analysis that can be research now and has just recently published about two years ago can be read and studied as the scientific world is slowly catching up to what Leonardo was trying to teach all those years ago, but nobody listened and they still do not listen. Where have you heard that before? Stay tuned if you’d like to see world class oil paintings even on digital will be in my view, the best in the world.

Have a good day……. many thanks Jimmy Springett wildlife painter. This particular painting is called ” Rock of Ages..”

A Long Road

Good morning today is December 4, 2024 and that according to WordPress is about eight years since my last blog. In looking at my media and oil paintings shared at that time none of you on my subscribers list are watching, on my FASO website, but I have in that time. Painted over 2000 original oil paintings.I’ve been spending time in research making my own oil paints with Earth Pigments and also water colors with my Earth Pigments and my output. The past couple of years has not been much output, as a result of all the research and learning. My most recent project I completed was my oil painting with Earth Pigments, making my own oil paints. My interpretation of Leonardo da Vinci’s, for his great work called Salvador Mundi. This particular oil painting had been not in view publicly for over 500 years and when it resurfaced in New York, New York, USA the curators had to remove a layer of some other artist oil paint over Leonardo’s paint, and once that was completed, the painting was auctioned at Christie’s in New York and now resides in the Louv in Dubai Middle East. The reason I wanted to do this particular work, and all the study over the years of Leonardo’s work, his subjects are always real, not imagined, and likewise when you look at his paintings, the eyes of all the subjects are tremendous. In the Renaissance area of time many of the Italian painters did a lot of work from the holy Bible, that was very popular theme and if you recall, Leonardo did the Last Supper which today remains ever popular. There are a couple of things about the painting, Leonardo’s painting I could not understand in this case why he chose to show Jesus in a blue robe? To me that is like when you hit your finger with a sledgehammer or you hear chalk screeching up across the board, it is really that bad. Also, and I am not sure on the restoration. If those who were responsible changed the nature of the original, I don’t know, but the eyes on Salvador Mundi there are really no eyes. That deviate from everything Leonardo ever did, and once again it’s like a thumb that has been smashed with a hammer. So in my endeavor using Earth Pigments made by Sage de France and marketed by Earth Pigments in Vermont USA, I started the journey couple of years ago and I just finished my Art Reception in 2 Roots Art and Wine Gallery in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. I felt there were two sources of light, not one and therefore, my light in my painting is different. I created beautiful eyes, where in the Leonardo’s original work no eyes, and I utilized a beautiful red color for the robe, which is Hebrew and Jewish the blue is not a Jewish color. At this point, I only have retouch varnish and about April 10 will be able to put the final varnish. The Hickory wood frame was built by my son, master carpenter Christopher James Springett, and I’m very grateful for the help. I’m not sure, but in my view the way, the work had been presented. If Leonardo did it in that form, it was really not a completed oil painting in my view and he was not done. So in my simplistic way in that interpretation completed the painting in the way that would be satisfying to the Jewish people. I call my painting of Salvador Mundi.” For Salvador “meaning for Jesus. Thanks…have a good day Jimmy Springett wildlife painter

2011 Federal Duck Stamp-Drake Wood Duck- Called, ” On A Log “

Auction Painting-Taste of Siren-2011

Each year someone very special is selected to win the Federal Duck Stamp, and while I enjoy this work, my painting has not been selected. You might ask, why do you want to paint the Duck Stamp? That is a very good question and worthy of a very good answer. When the program began way back in 1933, the art was very good, but with no color, then eventually color was added, making the judging elements more difficult. You have composition, with the 7 elements of design, color, and the duck species being portrayed. The numerical point system is not perfect yet by staying with their judging criteria the final and highest score is selected to be the Federal Duck Stamp the following year, there is always a one year lag in the program.

My process is very detailed as I go into the field to take images of as many duck species as I can photograph. The anatomy of the duck has to be perfect so my images from the field help me to document their every detail so I do not miss in my sketch and painting. I love the development side of the duck painting and all the time in the field studying these very beautiful ducks and there is a lot to learn in this process, habitat, behavior, and mating behavior in the spring with both the drake and hen. This is a dynamic experience and so memorable, worthy of the time necessary to document and record, for a future duck stamp. I do all my own camera work, as you may not know the duck stamp has to be free hand sketched and no other computer or other aid in making the sketch with is painted.

This year the 5 duck species are Mallard, Blue Winged Teal Cinnamon Teal, Gadwall, and Trumpeter Swan so each of us select one species and submit that painting by August 15, 2015, is the deadline. Approximately over 200 American Artists participate each year and as I develop my duck stamp blogs I’ll share the spoils of a winner and how the USFWS celebrates with the artist and his home community, very neat.

Best wishes,

Bald Eagle Original Pencil Sketch, Called, ” One Branch “

This bald eagle reminds me of wonderful days, blue skies, warmer temperatures in the sun and admiring this eagle, our Nation’s Bird, sitting high on what I call ” One Branch ” a perch that allows them to hunt to catch their daily bread in the wild, no grocery store to pull up to, but in the wild. They are more intelligent than man today knows but that is another story for another day.

This original sketch can be made into an original oil painting if you enjoy, and on the bottom of my blog is my FASO website address to contact me if you want a commission of this original sketch.

Have a good day and enjoy the winter, warm or cold all the same, is life in these United States.

Sandhill Cranes-Original Pencil Sketch, Called, ” Legs Up “

Those sweet sandhill cranes on November 1ST, were faced with incredible weather conditions, using around Thanksgiving Day, November 27, the sandhill cranes lift off for their wintering home in the south, due to very cold and heavy snows. This past November was very different and we experienced very cold temperatures, on November 1ST, I was visiting Crex Meadows Wildlife Area at Phantom Lake and the extreme below zero temperatures froze the lake solid and there standing on the ice were 4,000 sandhill cranes. The atmosphere that morning was full of moisture or fog making the sky a pure white color and the -4 degrees below zero, about have of the sandhill cranes pulled their legs up under their body to keep them from freezing. The usual temperatures for this time of year are 25-30 degrees above zero, so usually they do not stay when these very harsh temperatures are reached. IN today’s original pencil sketch one of the sandhill cranes displays his legs out behind him and the other sandhill crane has his legs tucked up under his body to keep warm. This original sketch is called, ” Legs Up ” and I am willing to paint an original oil painting of this sketch. If you buy this original oil painting you also receive this original pencil sketch, my thanks for buying my oil painting. At the bottom of this note is my FASO WEbsite you can contact me to pursue this painting, thank you in advance. Visit my WordPress blog daily to check for new original sketches, all will be unique and new, no repeats. Best wishes,
